FOI release

Oxford City Centre Footfall figures

Case reference FOI2024/00688

Received 21 June 2024

Published 28 June 2024

Request

Could you please provide footfall data month by month for 2022 and 2023, and as up to date in 2024 as you have available. The purpose is to ascertain increased or decreased footfall year on year in the key Christmas and January sales period in 2023/24.

Additionally, we would like to ask the following questions. 1. What percentage of visitors come from Ox postcodes, for as far back as you have this data available 2. How both the footfall data and the visitor location data is collected. This is in order to look at the frequent assertion that 'no one local shops in Oxford' and 'the published data must be dodgy'. Many thanks in advance for your attention to this matter.

Response

Pleaae find below the data requested:

 ยท                Footfall

  • Re Ox postcodes:

Our statistics for this data only go back to January 2023.

Additionally, we don't have monthly data ;we have quarterly data - supplied below.

2023 Q1 44.4% of UK visitors were from Oxford postcodes.

2023 Q2 49% of UK visitors were from Oxford postcodes.

2023 Q3 48.7% of UK visitors were from Oxford postcodes.

2023 Q4 48.7% of UK visitors were from Oxford postcodes.

2024 Q1 50.8% of UK visitors were from Oxford.

Unfortunately it is not currently possible to get this data for anyone visiting beyond the UK, as the current technology isn't refined across the world to gather this.

  • The data is provided by Huq Industries, they monitor a subsection of the population. This data is then processed against the number of observed mobile phone devices they collect to reflect an estimate of actual footfall for a given period. There is no double counting.
